Australia's captain Expected to Feature a Key Part in Ashes Series

Pat Cummins bowling

Pat Cummins has taken over 300 dismissals in 71 Test matches with an stellar bowling average.

Australia's selection chief George Bailey has stated that captain Pat Cummins will have a crucial role in this winter's historic rivalry.

Speculation had been growing that Cummins might be unavailable due to a ongoing back issue that remained unresolved.

Previous updates from the Australian camp suggested no final decision had been made regarding whether he would play, with the extended contest scheduled to begin on the 21st of November in Perth.

Bailey expressed that his recovery is on track and felt positive about the likelihood of being involved.

"We're aware that the window is narrowing and there are permutations around that, not only the physical problem, but other factors as well," the selector added.

"We're encouraged. We firmly believe that he's going to play a major part. Hopefully from the opening match. Should that not happen, then we'll pick it up."

Past Concerns

He was sidelined the white-ball matches against both Asian and Trans-Tasman rivals recently after medical tests showed a lower back issue.

He has a history of spinal problems, with setbacks in 2012-13, 2013-14 and 2015-16 forcing him out of three Australian summers in a limited period.

He emphasized he would be ""aggressive" and "take risks" in his recovery plan to secure his spot for the Ashes.

The selector indicated that there was no confirmation if Cummins had begun bowling as part of his rehabilitation but admitted it was "getting tight" for him to be fit for the first Test.

Contingency Plans

In case of absence, former captain Steve Smith will lead the side.

Versatile player Green was withdrawn recently from Australia's squad for their ODI contests against the Asian giants as a precautionary measure because of discomfort in his torso.

He labeled it as a "small issue and stated that he's scheduled to appear in the Sheffield Shield, so will be "in a good place to resume bowling."

"Considerable effort has gone into building out the plan for him to participate for the first Test as an all-rounder," Bailey explained.

"His involvement was limited to the starting games in any case. How he handles the willow in shorter formats, if it causes any delay for another day, we opted to adopt a safer strategy."
